Seismic Retrofit, Structural Engineering Design, and Renewable Energy
Description
(San Diego, CA) The once derelict building on the corner of University Avenue and Mississippi Street in
North Park, which has been used for everything from a gymnasium to a bathhouse, has undergone a
complete transformation, courtesy of NDD. Dr. Robert Nagell and partner Chris Chandler purchased the
concrete structure nearly 2 years ago with dreams of converting it into a modern animal hospital. Today
their dream has been realized as Bodhi Animal Hospital's doors are open, serving the community and its
furry friends.

The purchase of and renovations to the building cost about $3 million, resulting in a state-of-the-
art "green" animal hospital offering both traditional and holistic/eastern remedies. NDD was responsible
for all of the interior and exterior construction work at the 7,000 square foot site. The extensive
renovations implemented by NDD include an exterior facelift, solar panel design and installation, carport
design and installation, and parking lot construction.
In addition to the improved aesthetics of the structure, the energy efficiency of the building was
improved by more than 50%. The building utilizes the most current sustainable technologies from LED
light fixtures to insulation made from post-consumer recycled denim. The roof not only plays host to
fifty-eight solar tubes, which flood the large space with natural light, but also holds what is considered
one of the biggest privately owned solar arrays in San Diego. Even on cloudy days, the building
generates twice as much energy as it requires.
Prior to construction, the project was approved by the North Park Planning Committee and has now
become a premier example of the possibilities and merit of the redevelopment plan underway in
North Park. Local residents have welcomed the project with open arms, as it fills what was a void
in emergency animal care in the area and has transformed the building from an eye sore to a clean,
modern structure the residents of North Park can be proud of. NDD is delighted to be an example
to the community and hopes to be involved in the beautification of as many San Diego communities
as possible. To read further on Bodhi Animal Hospital or any of NDD's local projects, please visit our
